Q&A: What organic foods can be stored and eaten on the run?

Question by Rachel: What organic foods can be stored and eaten on the run?
I eat lunch at school during classes. I want organic foods instead of packaged cracker sandwiches. What can I get that has a long shelf life and doesn’t have to be refrigerated or prepared every day? I don’t want any mixed nuts or dried fruit mix things.

Hi, I’m a Nutrition student.

Choosing to eat organic foods is a great choice. Organic berries and bananas are a great choice if you don’t have refrigeration. Also, almost any vegetable will do fine for a few hours without refrigeration. Don’t forget to include a protein source like a meat or cheese in your lunch.

Hope this helps.

Q&A: Any ideas for tasty vegan foods that non-vegans would enjoy as well?

Question by Lovey: Any ideas for tasty vegan foods that non-vegans would enjoy as well?
We are having a birthday party for a vegan, so obviously we want to serve vegan foods for her. What are some good meat free/dairy free foods that non-vegans will appreciate as much as vegans will? We already have a recipe for chocolate cupcakes, but we still need ideas for the appetizers and etrees.

I have found that you can substitute many things in a recipe and make it vegan. I recently made vegan banana bread. I just substituted cornstarch and lemon juice for the egg, and agave nectar for the honey. I would try just thinking of all the foods you want to serve, vegan or not, and try to convert them to their vegan alternative. That way you can have your cake and eat it too!

What are good vegan foods that you can buy straight at a normal grocery store?

Question by nowandagayne: What are good vegan foods that you can buy straight at a normal grocery store?
I am vegan and the pricey stuff is not for me. I want to know what good things to eat that I could just buy that maybe aren’t made special for vegans, but just don’t have any animal byproducts in them. I already looked at PETA’s list. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Um…just read and compare the labels of the veggie chips and a bag of the chips that you would have eaten before.

Compare the salt and calories as well as how much of each you can actually have and even the ingredients. Some so-called healthy foods have more products in them than regular foods and that’s not healthy. And some say to eat so little of them that you won’t be satisfied until you eat double, or even triple, the amount it suggests. You may be better off eating what you’d eaten before. Or the veggie chips may be the best way to go.

It’s likely that the salt used on them is either kosher or sea salt which can cause bloating in some people and is often stronger in its flavor which can result in you craving soda or sweets as they will balance the salt. And that won’t really help you in your healthy eating goals!

You don’t have to buy foods specifically labels as healthy or natural to actually be healthy. You just have to do everything in moderation and get the adequate amount of exercise to burn off those calories to maintain the weight you are at.

Q&A: I like “HEALTH” foods?

Question by Listener: I like “HEALTH” foods?
I find “health foods” such as lean cuisines, skim milk, vegetables and low fat, low sugar stuff rather tasty and not as bad as others seem to make them out to be. Am I weird because I actually find these foods good and not totally and utterly disgusting?!! hehe :)
You did notice I put quotes around “health.” I know just because they are labeled as diet/health foods they are not necessarily healthy for you.

I am hypoglycemic & planning a trip to Italy. Can I bring “whole” foods in my suitcase to use while in Italy?

Question by DMTF: I am hypoglycemic & planning a trip to Italy. Can I bring “whole” foods in my suitcase to use while in Italy?
Planning a trip to Italy from the US – can I bring appropriate food in my suitcase on the plane (in either checked or carry-on baggage) needed for my diet while I am there — I don’t expect to be able to find health foods in europe (whole grain bread, etc.)

Or, can someone tell me if there are “health food” stores in Italy or whole grain breads? A steady diet of refined carbs in Italy will kill me….I will really get ill. Thanks!

It is unlikely that you will be able to take food into a foreign country, but check with your customs dept and the Italian consulate in your region. they should be able to help.Europe and Italy is very civilised and you will probably be able to buy all you need over there. Europeans eat far more healthier than most in the US

Question by Jai247: Gluten free foods in Montreal or Canada, any online stores I can use paypal to order?
I’m having dificulty finding a large range of gluten free products in Montreal, and I don’t have a credit card which makes ordering online difficult. I was wondering if there were any online gluten free stores, that ship to montreal and which accept paypal?

Hmm. I do not know about Ca persay but does Amazon take paypal? I am not sure if they do. I know ebay does and I have found some Gluten Free foods on Ebay. You can always request a catalog and some places will take money orders or checks. I like www.glutenfree.com. Request a catalog from them and see if they’ll accept a check or money order. I find they have a good selection. Also try gluten free trading company (not sure of web address). Good luck!
