Question by Ashley: Why would you be a vegan and not ever participate in protest?
Why would someone be a vegan, but not ever participate in a protest? It seems to me, that if you were a true vegan, you would be out there picketing, etc.. I am a member of a group that pickets in front of McDonalds at least once a month. I spend hours making up all the signs for our group.

The reason I ask is because I have invited several so called “vegans” to join us and they never join us. I thought most people become vegans because they care, but obviously some become vegan for vanity reasons.

Best answer:

Answer by Jack O
It’s a personal opinion and choice for everyone – vegan or not. Doesn’t mean some vegans don’t care…

Question by Anneke Fox: What are vegan protein powders that are good for loosing weight?
I need to loose some weight and I am a vegan who does not get enough protein. Does anyone know of any protein powders that I can add to water? thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by purple.star84
The only way you are not getting enough protein is if you are starving yourself. (first link) In which case, stop starving yourself and you will lose weight. (second link)

When you starve yourself your body goes into starvation mode and stores as much fat as it can, because your body doesn’t know when you are going to feed it again. If you need more protein for bodybuilding eat more green vegetables. If you aren’t bodybuilding, then just eat. Fruits, vegetables, a handful of nuts and you will be fine.

You need to eat meals though. Don’t just snack through the day.

I know that is not the question you asked. But what you are planning to do isn’t going to change anything for you. The first link explains protein and the vegan diet very well. It cite its sources also. I suggest reading that.

Question by ★Becca★: How do Vegan folk get their required nutrients?
I ask this being sincerely curious, because one of my friends recently tried to go completely vegan, but ended up ill, so went back to just vegetarian.

I know the difference between vegetarian and vegan is that vegetarians dont eat meat, but vegans dont eat animal by-products either. So, with that being said, how do you personally get your required nutrients to healthily function? i know there’s a nutritional supplement for everything these days, but there’s got to be something better than that.

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by caturdayz
A Vegan diet is something that should be handled carefully…
If you are not careful you could end up ill.

That being said however…

Vegans that properly plan their diets are healthier and a lot more compassionate than “carnivores” and even vegetarians.

All the nutrients that vegetarians and carnivores can get vegans can get as well.

I have been using formula up til now and would like to create a vegan diet for my 1 year old. I am planning on using fortified rice milk for calicum and vitamins b12 and D. I am looking for non soy recommendations for protein and fat that i can add to the rice milk. Coconut butter and olive oil are fats that i have already incorporated in his diet. For protien i am using chlorella and possibly spirulina. Any vegan alternative suggestions are appreciated. thank you!

Question by belle_of_the_ball_1234: Does anyone know of any completely organic shampoo’s and styling products that are available?
I am interested in getting some shampoo which is completely organic, and totally chemical free! It cannot contain parabens or phlates, and has to contain natural ingredients like plant extracts etc. I’ve seen some I like by The Organic Pharmacy but it is £20, and that is a bit expensive for me, can anyone suggest another organic brand that is good but retails at a reasonable price? It would also be helpful if they had styling products in the same range, like serum and straightening balm if possible. Many thanks!

Question by Love #me#, Hate #me#: Is it more important to be thought of as a vegan than to actually be a vegan?
People who aren’t actually vegans call themselves “vegan”. So is it a status symbol of sorts? Is that why they call themselves a vegan, while admitting they are just “trying to be a vegan”?

I apologize to those who have been offended by my line of questions and answers. The YA section V & V is for questions and answers regarding V & V, not for the promotion of V & V exclusively though.

Let it be understood that I agree with your cause. I think your cause is noble. To give any negative connotation to your cause or beliefs has not and will not be my agenda.

So please, either answer the question/questions or just ignore it if it bothers you.
awwdree—just a vegetarian? You underestimate yourself
angua—-30 years? Keep up the good work!
evil—a case of changing a definition to make something difficult to attain more convenient. When someone invents a concept though, you can’t just go and change it for convenience sake. That’s weak. If you want to be a true vegan you can move to a temperate climate, grow your own food and do whatever you need to do to be a true vegan. If that’s what you really wish to do is be a true vegan.

Your argument is like saying I have $ 50M and I’m trying to be a billionaire, so I’ll call myself a billionaire because after all, I AM trying.

A true vegan is only one who follows what the creator of veganism defined it as. You can’t change someone’s idea for convenience sake and say it’s the same thing.
evil—I may have miscomprehended your answer……my apologies if that is the case.
black byrus—I’ve agreed with you on other posts but when you say this:

“”Because I walk on the road, which has dirt underneath, which probably has animal feces and animal corpses in it. Really, I’m not even vegetarian, because I was walking by McDonald’s a few days ago and accidentally breathed in and I think I got a couple of meat molecules in my mouth. Even my very computer is… well, I don’t know what all is in it, but I can only assume it must have SOMETHING non-vegan in it…”"

I can’t take your answer seriously. I’ve been making a simple point with absolutely no gray area whatsoever.
shelly—I applaud your vegetarianism but:

“But the definition of VEGAN has been only no meat, dairy, or milk. So someone who may use leather, or even eat honey, can fit this definiton.”

does not fit the defintion as coined by the creaotr of the concept of veganism and you will likely be chastised here by “vegans” who will tell you “you are Not a vegan” while at the same time they are not vegans either.
blackbyrus—”as far as is possible and practical”—to me this says as long as it’s convenient….If a person really wants to be a true vegan they can…..they would have to make more than superficial sacrifices but they could do it. But no one is willing to give up their cushy lives to become a true vegan. As soon as it becomes inconvenient, further sacrifice is considered “absurd”. Vegan-lite is the vegan of today. Deciding their own limits of sacrifice to qualify as a vegan as opposed to living their lives according to the definition of veganism’s creator. As time went by, the inconvenient portions of veganism were doctored to make it easier to qualify as a vegan. Thus today’s vegan is vegan-lite compared to it’s creator’s definition. There are no sacrifices anymore. The standard has been lowered like the standards are lowered in U.S. schools. To accomodate those who can’t pass the test.
blackbyrus–BTW I appreciate your ability to exchange ideas without condescension.

Best answer:

Answer by awwwdree
I think a lot of people do think its a status symbol, because it takes a lot of strength to really be vegan, I was vegan for six years before I got pregnant with my son and started having cravings for cheeseburgers. I tried making boca burgers with veganrella but it did not work. it took a lot to get to where I am now, almost six years later, I am still only vegetarian, and not even striving to be vegan again. It’s hard.

Question by Rachel: What organic foods can be stored and eaten on the run?
I eat lunch at school during classes. I want organic foods instead of packaged cracker sandwiches. What can I get that has a long shelf life and doesn’t have to be refrigerated or prepared every day? I don’t want any mixed nuts or dried fruit mix things.

Best answer:

Answer by James
Hi, I’m a Nutrition student.

Choosing to eat organic foods is a great choice. Organic berries and bananas are a great choice if you don’t have refrigeration. Also, almost any vegetable will do fine for a few hours without refrigeration. Don’t forget to include a protein source like a meat or cheese in your lunch.

Hope this helps.
